William Thomas Hughes

Died on 20th April 1973
Sergeant Hughes was a police dog trainer. On the 4th April 1973 he was running a dog training exercise when he slipped on a wet, muddy bank and injured his ankle. Following the injury a large blood clot formed, and on 20th April 1973 it moved into his pulmonary artery and caused his death.
He was 51.

About The Museum

The Museum was founded in 1981. Funded by Greater Manchester Police, it not only collects and preserves archive material and objects relating to the history of policing in the Greater Manchester area, but acts as an important resource for community engagement, where visitors can talk to staff and volunteers about policing. GMP Museum holds primary and secondary source information about the history and development Greater Manchester policing. Our archive holdings are a mix of records – both official and personal.

Private Tours

If you would like to book a private tour for between 5- 25 people we offer these on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tours last between one and a half to two hours and are suitable for anyone aged over 6, they are currently free of charge but all donations are gratefully received. Groups who regularly visit us include: Schools, Colleges, Universities, ESOL and interest groups. Please call or email us for more information.

ARCHIVES ACCESS

GMP Museum holds primary and secondary source information about the history and development Greater Manchester policing. Our archive holdings are a mix of records – both official and personal.
Use of the archive is by appointment only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (during term-time) and Fridays.
Enquiries must be made by completing the relevant enquiry form here and emailing or posting it to us. We aim to get back to enquiries with an initial response within a fortnight, however this is dependant on our volunteer archive team.
